The CSU Off-campus Housing & Job Resource Centre (HOJO) is looking to hire part-time HOJO Assistants. The deadline to apply is 11:59pm Monday May 5th, 2025.  Internal candidates shall have a preference.

HOJO ASSISTANT

Type of Position: Permanent

Start Date:  2025-August 4

Location: CSU HOJO – H-224 In-person

End Date: Permanent

Salary/Hourly Rate: $22.61./hr (Class 4)

Description

The housing and job assistants help the Concordia community with housing and employment by providing legal information and education, resources, support, and services. Assistants engage and educate the Concordia community by conducting tenant and employee rights campaigns. They may also provide additional assistance through accompaniment and referrals. Housing and job assistants maintain the standards and integrity of confidentiality and internal procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to service users’ inquiries via phone, email, video conference, and in person.
  • Educate service users on the regulations of the Administrative Housing Tribunal (TAL), the Labour Standards Board (CNESST), and other relevant codes and processes.
  • Educate service users on preventative measures they can take to improve their living and working experiences.
  • Supply service users with information on recourses, assist in preparing documents (including but not limited to, letters to landlords, employers, roommates, or tenants), in opening files/inquiries with the TAL, CNESST, and/or city inspectors, and in accompanying service users to hearings, tribunals, and referrals.
  • Maintain, process, and document service users’ information, student complaints, classified ads, landlords, employers, and other partners’ information, and more.
  • Moderate user accounts and content on HOJO’s classified web platforms.
  • Create, edit, and proofread housing and employment information, including, but not limited to, printed materials, workshops, online materials, content for social media and websites, and campaigns.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of tenancy and employment issues, legislation, regulations, and procedures through ongoing training and research.
  • Maintain information resources from external bodies, such as brochures, procedural forms, guides, etc.
  • Collect feedback and track services provided to users: to generate knowledge and information about our community’s needs and challenges; to track shifts in employment and housing trends; to continually improve the department’s services.
  • Perform other tasks related to the day-to-day function of HOJO as needed.

Essential Requirements

  • Excellent speaking and writing skills in English and functional French;
  • interest and understanding of tenants’ and workers’ rights
  • Friendly, helpful, and polite customer service skills
  • Patient and must be able to work with the full spectrum of diversity within the Concordia community
  • Ability to research and convey information with clarity and accuracy;
  • Ability to take initiative, work autonomously, and work as a team;
  • Computer literate, knowledge of Excel, internet browsers, and search engines;
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada (valid SIN card required);
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student at Concordia University;
  • Must be able to work remotely with private space to work and virtually speak with students about confidential matters when operations are remote
  • Must be comfortable working in person in open-space office

Assets:

  • Experience providing front-line service in a fast-paced environment;
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft 365;
  • Strong knowledge of Excel;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Teams and Planner;
  • Knowledge of the Quebec Civil Code, particularly as it pertains to tenants’ rights
  • Knowledge of working regulations in Quebec
  • Knowledge of the TAL, CNESST, housing committees/ tenant’s associations and other advocacy groups,
  • Work experience with advocacy and/or non-profit organizations

*Note- The Work Study program allows full-time Concordia students to work on-campus part-time and is a service supported by Financial Aids and Awards office.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Only Full-Time Concordia Students are eligible for this position.
  • From September- April those applying must be available to work 8-15 hours per week, Monday-Thursday between 10am and 6pm and Friday 11-4.
  • Students must have a minimum of three 4-6-hour consecutive availabilities within Hojos opening hours.
  • Summer office hours may vary.
  • Applicants must be available for interviews in May
  • Applicants must also be available for in-person training August 5-19
