Description of Organization
Founded in 2017, Hamidou Horticulture was born out of an observation: the absence in the Quebec market production of vegetables traditionally consumed by African and Afro-descendant populations (okra, African eggplants, African sorrel, etc.) despite the existence of a strong demand for these vegetables in Montreal and the surrounding area.
Starting from a personal need for these ingredients to make our family recipes, we have made the production and accessibility of fresh, high-quality ethnic fruit and vegetables in Montreal our mission. For the past 8 years, we’ve been producing in our rented greenhouse in Verdun, in collaboration with the Grand Potager, producing African vegetable seeds and seedlings. For the past 6 years, we’ve also been renting farmland in Senneville, in collaboration with 5ème l’avenir, and in Île Bizard with local producers. Hamidou Horticulture ensures that Quebecers have access to authentic, fresh produce from Africa and its diaspora, grown right here in Montreal.
